Evaluation of Leverage Adjustment Speed by Consideration Cash Flow Fluctuations by Generalized Method of Moments

Abstract
Companies have an optimal capital structure that can change over time; companies tend to adjust their actual capital structure to the target capital structure. This research evaluates the speed of adjustment of financial leverage in listed companies in Tehran Stock Exchange. The research method is quasi-experimental with post-event design, and Research hypotheses have been analyzed and analyzed using a sample of 120 companies admitted to the Stock Exchange during the period of 2012-2019 using the Generalized Torque (GMM) method. The results of this study showed that Tehran Stock Exchange companies are trying to adjust their actual capital structure to the target capital structure. The rate of adjustment of the leverage to the target leverage is 29% for each period; this is where the leverage adjustment rate consists of long-term debt liabilities of 24% and short-term debt of 34%. in Tehran stock exchange, firms adjustment the short-term debt to target with more speed in comparison of long-term debt liabilities because the paid of short-term debt and reduce gap between actual leverage and target leverage is easier than long-term debt liabilities. Therefore the paid of short-term debt is more important. Operating cash flow encourages firms to move toward the target leverage.
